On behalf of the Conference Planning Committee, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Melbourne for the 2018 Australian Association of Gerontology Conference. Our theme for this conference is “Advancing not retiring: Active players, a fair future”. This theme builds on previous recent AAG conference presentations where the importance of both enabling and appreciating the contributions that older people make to their families, communities and society was acknowledged. The conference theme also acknowledges that opportunities for advancement are not evenly spread across the community. Older people who are poor, homeless, speak a language other than English, are LGBTI or from Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander backgrounds are less likely to be able to advance in older age than those who have more advantages. We expect to see a strong scientific program that advances our knowledge of ageing along these themes. I hope you we also take the opportunity to explore a little of the world’s most liveable city. Melbourne is a vibrant and diverse city with the best coffee in the world – just ask any Melbournian! Our social program will also reflect Melbourne’s diversity with a fabulous conference dinner theme of four seasons in one day. We look forward to receiving your abstracts soon and to seeing you in Melbourne on November 21st.
